Gas leak hospitalises 68 in Zhenjiang

18 July 2012
Sixty-eight people were hospitalised on 12 July after a sulphur dioxide leak in the Yangtze River port city of Zhenjiang in Jiangsu province, China Daily reported.

Zhu Wenzhong, director of the Jingkou district’s environmental protection bureau, said the gas leak was the fault of workers at the chemical manufacturer Zhenjiang Sopo Chemical Industry New Development. Mr Zhu added that the leak lasted about five minutes and that the company turned off the leaking device straight after noticing the problem.

The city’s Jiangsu University claimed that the amount of sulphur dioxide in the air never exceeded China’s legal limits. However, several residents complained that they couldn’t breathe.
