More repairs for Nanjing bridge

18 July 2012
A new round of maintenance work on the 44-year-old Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge started on 17 July and will last for three to four days, according to state media.

Local drivers have complained about the number and size of potholes, which are blamed on heavy vehicle use, poor drainage and inadequate maintenance. An investigation by Yangtze Evening News found 117 potholes along the bridge’s length, the biggest up to 20cm wide and 7cm deep.

Liu Zhiqing, deputy chief of the Nanjing bridge section, said an inspection of the bridge will assess the bridge’s structural soundness and whether it can support the amount of traffic now passing over it. The local government said more than 80,000 vehicles now cross the bridge daily, about 70,000 more than it was originally designed to convey.
