New air cargo route for Chongqing

18 July 2012
Yangtze River Express Airlines, a subsidiary of China’s largest private air carrier HNA Group, has started a new all-cargo service from Shanghai-Pudong via Chongqing to Singapore, Xinhua reported. Services will depart every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, using an Airbus 330 freighter.

Shanghai is likely to become the world’s leading air cargo hub by 2015, according to Li Derun, president of Shanghai Airport Authority.

Mr Li, who was speaking at the opening of a new US$175m north Asia hub by Deutsche Post DHL, said such investments by major global companies at Shanghai Pudong International Airport are now driving air traffic into the city. He claimed that UPS and FedEx are also planning to base their regional express hubs in the airport area.

Pudong airport handled around 3.1m tonnes of cargo in 2011, putting it a close third behind Hong Kong International Airport and Memphis International Airport in the US.
