Officials order Three Gorges to reduce water release flow

18 July 2012
The Yangtze Flood-prevention Headquarters issued an order on 13 July, asking the management of the Three Gorges Reservoir to reduce the volume of water in its release cycle. As a result, the Three Gorges Administration of Navigational Affairs was able to allow more than 130 vessels downstream of the dam to continue their journey within 24 hours. These vessels were forced to wait in the area as the full force of the water release was deemed too dangerous for shipping.

Reports claimed that by 3:00pm on 14 July, an additional 513 vessels had still to be dispersed. That process would take four to five days, according to official estimates.
