Western China records fastest GDP growth

25 July 2012
Regions in western China experienced the country’s fastest economic growth in 2011 and are expected to maintain this status in 2012, according to a report by Social Sciences Academy Press reported by Xinhua.

The 12 western provincial-level regions − Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang – had a combined GDP of Rmb9,970bn last year.

The report cited a steady decline in the impoverished population as a result of poverty alleviation measures in the west. However, it noted that poverty had returned to some areas that had previously climbed out of poverty.

Chongqing's GDP reached Rmb531bn in the first half of 2012, up 14 per cent year-on-year, ranking it second nationwide and first in the country’s western regions.
