Expansion starts at Wuhan airport

1 August 2012
A ceremony was held on 26 July to mark the beginning of constructing Terminal 3 at Wuhan Tianhe Airport, attended by Deputy Minister of Transport and Director of China Civil Aviation Authority Li Jiaxiang and Hubei provincial governor Li Hongzhong. The expansion project, costing nearly Rmb16bn, will be completed by 2015.

The project involves building a second runway, 3,600 metres long and 60 metres wide and capable of accommodating Airbus 380s. A terminal in the shape of a flying phoenix will also be built with a total area of 370,000 sq metres. Upon completion, the expanded airport will have an annual capacity of 35m passengers and 440,000 tons of cargo, more than three times the current capacity.
