Shipping resumed at the Three Gorges shiplocks

1 August 2012
Shipping was resumed at 8am on 26 July at the Three Gorges shiplocks after 48 hours’ suspension due to the biggest flood since their operation began in 2003. According to the Three Gorges Administration of Navigational Affairs, at the peak of the storm the current reached 71,200 cubic metres per second, which was deemed too dangerous for shipping. During the suspension, more than 750 vessels had to anchor in the area.

According to China Three Gorges Corp, water was released from the Three Gorges Dam at a rate of 45,100 cubic metres per second on 29 July in an effort to reduce the flood risk on the upper reaches of the Yangtze.
