State Council sets out development strategy for middle region

1 August 2012
China’s Premier Wen Jiabao chaired a working meeting for the standing committee of the State Council on 25 July, setting out steps to develop the central region of the country.

The region incorporates six provinces: Shanxi (whose capital is Taiyuan), Anhui (Hefei), Jiangxi (Nanchang), Henan (Zhengzhou), Hubei (Wuhan) and Hunan (Changsha). The Yangtze flows through Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei and Hunan.

The State Council meeting prioritised seven major tasks including the development of a regional integrated intermodal transport network, supporting efforts by Wuhan, Zhengzhou and Changsha to become regional financial centres through reforms and exploring the possibility of establishing the ‘Yangtze customs clearance’ model, which allows shippers to clear customs at any point of origin along the Yangtze.

This is a significant boost for the development of central China as regional governments strive to emulate the economic success in the western region following the central government’s Go West campaign was launched in 2000.
