Water levels continue to rise on Yangtze

1 August 2012
Affected by flooding in central and western parts of China, the Yangtze River is experiencing rising water levels. The level in the Jiujiang section of the river in Jiangxi province, for example, rose to 19.54 metres at 8am on 29 July, more than one metre higher than two weeks previously, according to Tan Guoliang, head of the provincial hydrographic bureau.

The water level in part of Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake in Jiangxi province, has exceeded the warning level. The provincial flood control and draught relief headquarters have tightened up monitoring efforts on the lake shore and are preparing emergency rescue measures to ensure people’s safety.
