Three Gorges reduces water discharge rate

12 September 2012
The Three Gorges Dam has started to gradually reduce its rate of water discharge from 19,000 cubic metres per second to 8,000 cubic metres per second at the end of October.

The China Three Gorges Project Corporation said the water level in the dam will reach 175 metres by the end of October at the earliest.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters requires the company to closely monitor hydrological changes in the river’s upper reaches and dam operation during full-capacity runs.

During the dry winter and spring seasons, the dam alleviates drought conditions in downstream areas by releasing water from the reservoir.
