China’s capital refurbishment sector set to flourish

10 October 2012
Gao Dongsheng, deputy director of Energy Saving and Recycling Department under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at an international conference held in Beijing last week that China’s capital refurbishment sector would reach an output value of Rmb150bn by 2015.

Capital refurbishment refers to the restoration of used capital equipment such as auto parts, engineering machinery and machine tools to the same high standards as new products. Currently, the sector has the capability to refurbish auto engines, gearboxes and power generators with an annual output value of Rmb2.5bn, according to Xinhua.

Mr Gao said that, at the government level, trials are being carried out in selected companies that produce engineering machinery and power generators to help them attain economies of scale.

In the auto sector alone, he said, it is expected that 14m cars will be written off each year by 2020, posing a great challenge to the future sustainability of the sector.

Wuhan and Chongqing are two of the most important auto manufacturing centres on the Yangtze.
