SIPG posts year-high growth in container throughput

17 October 2012
Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) recorded a container throughput of 2.91m TEU in September, up 5.6 per cent over the same month last year, according to China Shipping newspaper. This was the highest monthly increase in container throughput so far this year. Throughput of general cargo rose by 10.1 per cent year-on-year to 44.42m tons.

For the first nine months of the year, SIPG saw a 4.25 per cent increase in general cargo throughput to a total of 377m tons and a 1.89 per cent rise in container throughput, compared with the same period last year.

SIPG’s container throughput exceeded 30m TEU for the first time in 2011, putting Shanghai ahead of any other port in the world. Its ambition to take the majority of container volumes on the Yangtze has led to the company investing in major ports such Jiujiang, Wuhan and Chongqing.
