Work starts on Xian-Chengdu high-speed railway

31 October 2012
Construction work has started on a major high-speed passenger railway in western China. The 643km-long line will link Xian, capital of northwest Shaanxi province to Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan.

The project will be completed in five years and will involve an investment of more than Rmb40bn. Once the new railway is put into operation, travel time between the two cities will be shortened from 12 hours to just three hours.

Much of the route is mountainous and 127km of line will comprise tunnels through the Qinling Mountains.
