Cracks close Jiujiang Bridge

14 November 2012
Heavy vehicles have been prevented from crossing Jiujiang Bridge over the Yangtze River in Jiangxi province because cracks have appeared in a section of the road. From the evening of 11 November, the bridge was open only to passenger vehicles weighing less than 20 tons, Jiangxi Daily reported.

During a routine check on the bridge, maintenance workers found cracks at the joint of the road span and a pier. The Chinese Academy of Railway Sciences has been asked to provide a repair plan by 14 November.

Jiangxi police advised drivers of vehicles from Guangdong province to use the Daqing-Guangzhou highway if they were travelling to Hubei and Henan provinces or the Jinan-Guangzhou highway to go to Anhui province. Vehicles from Hubei were advised to take Highway G45 or G56 to travel to Jiangxi.

Built in 1992, Jiujiang Bridge comprises four vehicle lanes on the top deck and two railway tracks on the bottom deck.
