Chongqing appoints new party chief

21 November 2012
Sun Zhengcai has been named as party chief of Chongqing, following the downfall of the disgraced Bo Xilai earlier this year. The 49-year-old Sun was admitted to China’s Politburo after last week's party congress.

Sources quoted by SCMP said that 53-year-old Shanghai vice-mayor Tu Guangshao will soon become the southwestern municipality’s new mayor.

Mr Sun was previously party boss of the northeastern province of Jilin and a former agriculture minister. Further advancement could follow if he succeeds in Chongqing. “If Sun can handle the new job well, it could clear the way for a higher position in the future, just like Zhang Dejiang," said Hu Xingdou, a political commentator at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang immediately succeeded Bo Xilai as party chief in Chongqing.
