Fourteen accidents on Yangtze in November

The Yangtze Maritime Safety Authorities announced that the number of accidents on the river totalled 14 in November, down year-on-year by 12.5 per cent. Six of the accidents involved eight vessels that were digging or carrying silt from the riverbed and eight involved collisions. Six of the accidents happened in the waters of Huangshi, Hubei province.

According to the Yangtze MSA, 141 accidents happened in its area of responsibility, between Anhui and Chongqing waters, during the first 11 months of the year. This was 18.5 per cent down from the same period last year. The accidents claimed 27 lives and 12 sunken vessels, resulting in a direct economic loss of more than Rmb15m, up 43 per cent. The number of deaths more was more than double last year’s total.
