Sichuan-Guizhou expressway opens

5 December 2012
The first expressway to connect Sichuan and Guizhou provinces in southwest China opened to the public at midnight on 28 November, Sichuan Daily reported.

The Na Qian expressway covers a distance of 135km and cost Rmb10.7bn to build. It starts from Shiba township, Xuyong county on the border of Sichuan and Guizhou, where it connects with the Bijie-Shengji expressway that will start construction soon. It ends in Xinle town, in Luzhou’s Naxi district, where it links up with Naxi-Nanchang expressway that has already been opened to traffic.

The road is the last part of Sichuan’s ‘southwest passageway to the sea’ and it has presented considerable difficulties due to the mountainous terrain. There are 119 viaduct bridges along the expressway, and bridges and tunnels account for 40 per cent of its total length.

Guizhou will have eight expressways opened by the end of this year, reported Xinhua, with a further 13 under construction.

The provincial government has invested Rmb50bn on transport construction in the first 10 months of 2012, a year-on-year increase of 14 per cent. Expressways accounted for Rmb41bn of that total.

The total length of Guizhou’s expressways is expected to total 4,500km by 2015.
