Surge in railway freight volumes

12 December 2012
China’s railways transported 3.56bn tonnes of freight between January and November, according to statistics from the Ministry of Railways. The total included 2.06bn tonnes of coal, 126.1m tonnes of oil (up 2 per cent year-on-year) and 93.6m tonnes of grain (up 5.4 per cent).

Daily railcar demand stood at 200,000 in November, 20,000 cars more than in October. Demand has been particularly strong in the north of the country. Lanzhou Railway Bureau’s volume increased 9.5 per cent, while Hohhot Railway Bureau’s throughput went up 9.4 per cent.

Truck freight figures have also been showing signs of recovery. In the first 10 months of 2012, the country’s truck traffic increased 14.1 per cent to 26.33bn tonnes, faster than the 14 per cent growth recorded in the January-September period, according to transport ministry data.
