Wuhan subway test to start on 28 December

12 December 2012
Later this month, passengers in Wuhan will be able to start using China’s first subway line to cross the Yangtze River.

Over the past three months, subway trains have run through the 28km tunnel for Wuhan Line 2, which links the districts of Wuchang and Hankou. Passengers will be allowed to board the trains from 28 December when the test run starts, according to officials from Hubei provincial transportation bureau.

The line is expected to handle half of the city’s cross-Yangtze traffic flow, easing congestion on bridges over the river. Planners hope it will transport at least 600,000 passengers daily by 2015.

More than 100 bridges are currently in use across the 6,300km-long Yangtze River.

Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, lies at the intersection of the Han and Yangtze rivers. The central part of the city is divided into three major areas by the rivers.
