Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed line to open on 26 December

The Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway will open on 26 December, said the Ministry of Railways, cutting the journey time from 22 hours to around eight hours. It will be the world’s longest high-speed railway, with a distance of 2,298 km, according to the ministry.

The Wuhan-Guangzhou part of the route was put into service in December 2009, while the Zhengzhou-Wuhan section opened on 28 September this year. The 693km-long Beijing-Zhengzhou section, the final part of the route, began trial operations on 11 November and the trial has gone smoothly, according to a publicity official from Zhengzhou railway bureau, quoted by China Daily.

The designed speed of the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail route is 350kph.

Ticket prices have not yet been announced, but current prices on the Zhengzhou-Wuhan section show that the average cost is Rmb0.73 per kilometre for first-class and Rmb0.46 per kilometre for second-class .
