More delays expected at Three Gorges Dam

19 December 2012
The Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport has stated that the annual repair of the northern shiplocks of the Three Gorges Dam will start in March and last 20 days. This means that operations will be suspended and both upstream and downstream river traffic will rely on the south shiplocks when passing the dam, creating delays and congestion in the area as a result.

Between 7 March and 29 April this year, the southern shiplocks underwent a 20-day repair, while the No.1 shiplock at the Gezhouba dam was repaired for a period of 55 days.

The annual repairs are carried out by the Three Gorges Corporation, which owns the facilities. Major upstream shippers such as Chongqing-based ABB have long called for greater advance notice to make alternative plans, but the Three Gorges Administration of Navigational Affairs under the Yangtze River Administration, which operates the facilities, has until now been unable to give details more than three months ahead of the work commencing.
