Technology helps to cut accident rate in middle reaches

20 December 2012
Yichang MSA hosted a press conference last week to report a year-on-year 50 per cent reduction in accidents during the current dry season.

The middle reaches of the Yangtze River are traditionally more prone to accidents during the dry season. The storing and releasing cycle of the Three Gorges Dam has exacerbated the situation. Over the past five years, 70 per cent of all accidents in the middle reaches have occurred during the dry winter months and most of them were caused by overloading, according to the MSA officials. Modern technology that allows real-time surveillance and therefore more effective patrols has contributed to the reduction of accidents, they said.

Meanwhile, the Yangtze MSA has announced that, starting from 14 December, vessel permits will be issued section by section of the river so that any vessels suspected of overloading when passing the middle reaches will have to lighten before a permit is granted.
