Chongqing reduced to single lane traffic

9 January 2013
The severe drought in the upper reaches of the Yangtze has reduced some of the Chongqing section to single lane traffic, according to a story published in China Water Transport Newspaper on 8 January. Local maritime officials had decided to impose single lane traffic in Banan, Jiangjin and Yongchuan, the worst affected spots. In Jiangjin, for example, the water level was 1.29 metres on 7 January and the narrowest part of the shipping channel was only 65 metres wide, not enough for two vessels to pass each other safely, according to MSA officials.

Chongqing MSA is sending information about the water level and weather to all passing vessels every day and tightening procedures for permit applications. It is not yet clear when normal traffic conditions will resume.
