Fog disrupts inland airports

9 January 2013
Dense fog has caused major disruption at Chengdu Shuangliu airport in Sichuan. On 6 January, 180 flights were delayed and 35 cancelled, and worse was to follow on the next day, when 151 flights were grounded and nearly 10,000 passengers were stranded. The fog reduced visibility at the airport to 50 metres from about 5 am on 7 January, forcing it to close for about six and a half hours.

Earlier in the month, heavy fog caused a major backlog of flights at Kunming Changshui airport in Yunnan province, stranding nearly 7,500 travellers. Poor visibility cancelled 440 of the 716 flights scheduled to take off by 10pm on 3 January.
