Foreign vessel blamed for Yangtze waste discharge

9 January 2013
More than 162 cubic metres of contaminated water was discharged into the Yangtze River estuary by a Panamanian-registered cargo ship, according to the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration and reported in China Daily.

The alleged discharge by the 2,282-ton vessel occurred on four occasions on 8 November and 25 November.

According to the article, discharges of this kind contravene international conventions and China’s marine environmental management regulations on the prevention of pollution from ships.

The case is currently under investigation. Mariners from the vessel have denied the pollution discharge.
