Landslide closes bridge near Three Gorges dam

9 January 2013
Two pedestrians were slightly injured in a landslide on 4 January near the Three Gorges dam, local government authorities said. One car was also damaged after around 10,000 cubic metres of rock fell from a nearby mountain onto the bridge.

The landslide affected Zhaojun Bridge, which spans the Xiangxi River on a road from Yichang, Hubei province, to Chongqing municipality and Sichuan province. The incident disrupted road traffic, said Gong Yong, deputy chief of the road management bureau of Yichang’s Xingshan county.

Traffic police have blocked the bridge so they can conduct a safety inspection, and the cause of the landslide is under investigation.
