Taicang to be classified as sea port

9 January 2013
Taicang, part of Suzhou port, is classified as a sea port as of 1 January, according to the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport. This is the first time a Yangtze river port has been approved for such a change of status.

This means that ocean vessels bound for Taicang will no longer need to apply for piloting twice, once to Shanghai Piloting Centre when entering China’s coastal waters and once again to the Yangtze Piloting Centre when entering the Yangtze. Also, loading and unloading fees will be in line with other sea ports such as Waigaoqiao terminal in Shanghai, leading to a saving for shippers. Meanwhile, shipping lines do not need an extra licence for providing services from Taicang.

It is not yet clear, but very likely, that official statistics may be affected from this year. In 2012, container throughput in Taicang exceeded 4m TEU, accounting for nearly one third of the combined container throughput of all major ports on the Yangtze trunkline
