Chongqing initiative to boost public transport

16 January 2013
Chongqing Transport Commission announced last week that those people using the city’s pre-paid electronic cards for public transport will be entitled to free transfer within the hour between buses and the underground railway system. This is an improvement on the previous policy of a half price transfer within the hour.

According to an official estimate, this policy, taking effect from 15 January, will benefit 1.16m people and cost the local government at least Rmb500m a year.

The measure is in line with the State Council’s New Year directive to local governments to place a better public transport system at the core of urban transport infrastructure planning.

A taxi telephone booking service, real-time electronic display of bus information and the networking capability of the city’s coach services are among the measures that Chongqing government has taken to promote public transport. For 2013, the city’s transport commission will focus on expanding the public transport network to cover suburban areas and increase its capability to monitor and disseminate transport information.
