Railway cargo volume stays flat in 2012

23 January 2013
China’s railways carried 3.89bn tonnes of cargo and packages in 2012, unchanged on the previous year. Coal made up 2.26bn tonnes of the total, followed by oil (137.77m tonnes) and grain (104.44m tonnes).

Railway passenger volume in China increased by 4.8 per cent year-on-year to 1.89bn in 2012, according to data from the Ministry of Railways.

Fixed-asset investment in the railway system will hit Rmb650bn in 2013, including Rmb520bn in infrastructure investment, said Sheng Guangzu, the railways minister. This will lead to an increase in the length of track of 5,200km.
