Wuhan bans cargo trucking on bridges and in tunnels

23 January 2013
Wuhan Transport Police issued a notice on 17 January, stipulating that all the bridges and tunnels within the city’s three ring road system will be no-go areas for cargo trucks as of 1 February. Details have been posted on the Wuhan government’s website.

According to local media, Wuhan transport officials are rolling out a strategy of shifting trucking from day time to night time by the end of this year to reduce congestion and the number of accidents in the city centre. Even at night, trucks will need special licences to enter central areas, officials were quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, transport infrastructure continues to be built at a rapid pace. Six bridges and tunnels across the Yangtze are being built in the city, including the No.4 metro line, part of which pass underneath the Yangtze. By 2018, when all six projects are completed, Wuhan will have 15 crossings over or under the river.
