Yangtze dredging programme brings huge benefits, says official

23 January 2013
The dredging programme of the Yangtze River, which began in 2003, has created huge economic benefits for provinces and cities along the river, according to Xiong Xuebin, director of the Yangtze River Hydrographic Bureau.

General cargo volume on the Yangtze trunkline totalled 1.78bn tons in 2012, four times that of 2003 with an average annual growth rate of 10 per cent.

The river’s shipping capacity has been vastly expanded as the result of dredging, said Mr Xiong, allowing much larger vessels to reach the upstream city of Chongqing. He said the depth of the river’s 37km Chongqing-Yibin stretch has been increased to 2.7 metres from the original 1.8 metres.

Larger vessels are also now able to sail in the river’s middle and lower reaches.
