Major dredging project starts in Yangtze

30 January 2013
The Yangtze River Administration stated that Rmb4bn has been set aside for a major dredging project in the middle reaches of the river.

Director of the Yangtze Waterway Bureau, Xiong Xuebing, said that the stretch covers 280.5km between Changmenxi and Xiongjiaozhou and includes 13 shallow spots. The dredging project will take three to five years to complete. By then, the minimum water level will reach 3.5 metres, with a minimum width of 150 metres and turning radius of 1,000 metres. This will allow 3,000 dwt vessels and 10,000 dwt barge fleets to pass all year round.
