ADB project to help Chongqing water transport

20 February 2013
The Asian Development Bank has set up a project to finance Chongqing’s efforts to build the municipality into a shipping centre on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, according to the city’s port authorities. The US$400,000 project is designed to help address regulatory issues, improve the efficiency of the water transport network and provide technical support for the shipping centre.

In December, the ADB supported its first inland waterway project in China. In providing a loan of US$150m, the project aims to help Hunan provincial government in its attempt to dredge the Xiangjiang River, one of the major tributaries of the Yangtze, so that by 2018, 1,000dwt vessels will be able to sail on the 773km-long waterway.
