Central Chinese cities sign economic co-operation pact

27 February 2013
Mayors of four provincial capital cities in central China signed a strategic partnership agreement on 23 February that pledged to co-ordinate efforts in building the Central China Economic Belt.

According to the agreement, the cities of Changsha, Hefei, Nanchang and Wuhan will devise a regional development strategy, and push for industrial cooperation and infrastructure construction that can satisfy common interests. Leaders from the cities will attend regular meetings in order to carry out regional co-operation.

Agreements were also signed by representatives of 11 government departments from the four cities, including transport, technology, commerce and health, for sharing resources and boosting personnel exchanges.

The new economic belt covers an area of 440,000 sq km encompassing Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi and Hubei provinces, with a cluster of 40 cities boasting a total population of 160m.

Wuhan is one of China’s leading iron and steel production bases and has expanding machinery manufacturing, car-making and photoelectron industries. Changsha specialises in the construction equipment and engineering machinery sectors. Hefei wants to build itself as China’s leading electric appliance production base, while Nanchang is a traditional aircraft production base.
