More delays at Three Gorges shiplocks

27 February 2013
One-way traffic has been imposed again on the Three Gorges shiplocks, according to a report from China Water Transport Newspaper. The temporary restriction, which began on 21 February, is to facilitate a dredging project at the exit channel of the shiplocks. The dredging is scheduled to finish by 10 March and is designed to remove the silt that has accumulated in the 750-metre stretch downstream of the shiplocks.

Apart from slowing down the traffic at what is already a severe bottleneck on the Yangtze River, the action will have alienated many shippers in the upper reaches of the Yangtze such as ABB who have appealed to the authorities for a long time to be given advance notice for maintenance work such as this so that they can make alternative arrangements.
