Air cargo volumes shift inland

6 March 2013
The shift of manufacturing investment from coastal to inland China is contributing to new air services and is directly impacting freight patterns, according to a report by the market intelligence company the Centre for Aviation.

It claims that the combined freight moved by Cathay Pacific from Chongqing, Chengdu and Zhengzhou has now overtaken that of Shanghai. Volumes at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province and the world’s largest centre for the production of iPhones, grew by more than 40 per cent in 2012, while growth in Chengdu and Chongqing was more modest but still healthy. By contrast, Shanghai experienced a single-digit decrease in volumes.
