Chongqing throughput to reach 1m TEU this year

6 March 2013
The Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport said that throughput of general cargo in Chongqing is expected to stand at 135m tons this year, compared with 124.7m tons in 2012; container throughput will reach 1m TEU, up from 868,7000 TEU. The annual growth rate has slowed from 20 per cent to below 10 per cent due to the slow recovery of the world economy and ongoing maintenance repairs at the Three Gorges and Gezhouba dams, officials said.

Chongqing said it would spend Rmb3.2bn on waterway infrastructure this year and speed up renovation and infrastructure for the Xiaojiang, Meixi and Baolong rivers. Money would also be spent on developing rivers that feed into the Three Gorges Reservoir, including the Dongxi, Tangxi, and Modaoxi.

In addition, the municipal government confirmed that it would start construction this year of Foeryan phase two and the Jiangjiacao terminal in Shizhu county.

Upstream of Chongqing, dredging work continues on the section of the Yangtze up to Luzhou in Sichuan province, where water levels have been falling in recent times. When the work is completed, the depth of the river at Jiulongpo terminal will reach six metres.
