Work starts on Shanghai-Nantong railway

6 March 2013
Construction has started on a railway line between Shanghai and Nantong, Jiangsu province, reported Shanghai Daily.

The 137km line will mark the completion of a railway system running north and south that connects the coastal provinces of Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Zhejiang and Fujian. “The Hutong Railway is an important part of China’s great coastal railway channel,” said the vice head of the Railways Ministry, Lu Dongfu.

The project should take five-and-a-half years to complete. Trains will run at a designed speed of 200kph, shortening the journey time to just one hour.

A new, 1,092-metre cable-stayed bridge for trains and road traffic will span the Yangtze River, said Zhang Min, director of the China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance and Design Institute.
