Drought persists in Yunnan

13 March 2013
About 5m people in southwest China’s Yunnan province have been affected by a severe drought that has persisted over recent months, provincial authorities said.

More than 1.43m people and 796,000 heads of livestock lack sufficient drinking water, according to the Yunnan Provincial Water Resources Department.

Only 13.4mm of rainfall fell in the first two months of 2013, about 64 per cent less than the average for the period. This has meant that water is no longer flowing in 134 medium-sized and small rivers in Yunnan, and 138 small reservoirs there have dried up.
