Rail freight prices likely to increase

20 March 2013
The dismantling of the Ministry of Railways could lead to train travel becoming more expensive than flying, according to a senior engineer at this year’s session of the National People's Congress.

Wang Mengshu, deputy chief engineer of the China Railway Tunnel Group and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, predicted the debts built up by the ministry will lead to a rise in prices. Railway freight costs are also set to increase after the establishment of China Railway Corp, he predicted, having not increased for 30 years.

He also expressed concern that the corporation is likely to construct only the most profitable railways rather than the most needed.

Under the reforms announced during the NPC, China Railway Corp has taken over the commercial tasks of the Ministry of Railways, whose administrative functions were absorbed by the Ministry of Transport.
