Normal traffic restored at Three Gorges shiplocks

27 March 2013
The 20-day repair project on the northern shiplocks at the Three Gorges Dam was completed by 20 March and traffic returned to normal the following day, according to the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport. However, officials acknowledge that it will take some time for the backlog to clear. Tang Guanjun, the administration’s director who was once head of the Three Gorges Administration of Navigational Affairs, admitted recently that one day’s suspension of traffic at the Three Gorges would take approximately 10 days to clear.

According to officials, at peak times, there were more than 700 vessels waiting in the waters between the Three Gorges and Gezhouban dams. But they took comfort from the fact that no accidents happened during the 20-day period.

When the northern shiplocks were suspended for operation, the southern shiplocks catered for both upstream and downstream traffic, slowing down the shipping tremendously at what is already a bottleneck on the Yangtze.
