Chengdu-Poland rail cargo service to start on 26 April

10 April 2013
A new rail cargo service between Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, and the central Polish city of Lodz is due to start on 26 April. It will be the fastest cargo train service between western China and Europe, reported Xinhua, taking 12 to 14 days, one third of the ocean shipping time. It will also be 75 per cent cheaper than using air transport.

The route is 9,826km long, stretching from Chengdu’s Qingbaijiang railway container terminal via Xinjiang’s border city of Alashankou, and passing through Kazakhstan, Russian and Belarus to Poland.

Previously, products made in Chengdu had to be transported to Shenzhen or Shanghai before being shipped to European ports.

Zhang Chi, a director at Chengdu Logistics Office, said that the cost of rail freight is currently more than twice that of shipping, which is the main reason behind its comparatively slower growth rate. But if the efficiency of rail freight is improved, rail transportation will become increasingly popular.

According to a Chengdu government work report, the city aims to exploit its advantage in air and railway transportation to achieve its goal of being a logistics hub.
