Wuhu MSA cracks down on alcohol abuse

10 April 2013
Wuhu Maritime Safety Authorities have recently started using breathalysers as part of its routine patrols to crack down on accidents caused by ship crew drinking too much alcohol.

It is not clear how many accidents on the Yangtze can be directly linked to alcohol consumption among crew members, or whether drinking is completely banned. Any crew member found over the limit will face severe punishment, officials say.

This move is part of a wider campaign launched by the Yangtze MSA at the beginning of this year to improve safety across its remit, which comprises the 2,100km section of the Yangtze trunkline between Anhui and Chongqing, plus 1,000km of tributaries and 19 lakes and reservoirs.
