Wuhan to build dedicated railway for GM project

17 April 2013
Wuhan is going to build a dedicated railway line for General Motors in the southern part of the city, 26 km from the city centre, according to Wuhan Reform and Development Commission. The second round of environmental assessment of the project has just begun.

The 10km line will involve the construction of seven bridges and 17 culverts, is estimated to cost Rmb600m. There will be space reserved for building a railhead into a local port terminal. Wuhan also plans to build the city’s second airport nearby.

General Motors is to invest Rmb7bn in a production base in Jiangxia district in the southern part of Wuhan. Construction of the plant started last June. By 2014, the first phase will have been completed with an annual capacity of 300,000 cars. According to the blueprint, GM Wuhan aims to have an annual capacity of 2m cars, ranging from small-to-medium sized models, SUVs and new-fuel-powered cars.
