New hydro station exacerbates low water level in Luzhou

8 May 2013
Xiluodu hydropower station, second only in China to the Three Gorges power station in terms of capacity, started its first ever cycle of storing water on 4 May. This is posing a great challenge to waterway officials in downstream Luzhou, Sichuan province, where between 1 and 3 May they had already reported a low water level of 0.18 metres due to decreased rainfall in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.

The water-storing process will last until the second half of June when the water level at the hydropower station will reach 540 metres. The drastic change in water level and the frequency of such changes are making waterway maintenance work extremely difficult, according to the Yangtze Waterway Bureau.

The Yangtze Waterway Bureau maintains guaranteed minimum water levels across the Yangtze. If a minimum water level cannot be maintained in Luzhou, shipping could be suspended between the city and Chongqing.
