Water level falls to year-low on upper Yangtze

8 May 2013
Heavy rain and hail has fallen in parts of central and southwest China in recent days, welcome news to users of the Yangtze River and other inland waterways after a lengthy period of dry weather.

The water level at Yangjiaotan, part of Chongqing port, fell to 1.88 metres, its lowest level so far this year. Chongqing Maritime Safety Administration warned passing boats of the potential dangers posed by striking a reef and becoming stranded.

The water level in Chongqing’s Wushan county in the Three Gorges reservoir area dropped to 160 metres on 3 May. This was 3.25 metres lower than that of same time last year.
