Wuhan agricultural produce terminal to open by 2014

8 May 2013
Construction of the first phase of a specialist terminal for agricultural produce started on 7 May in Jiangxia district, south east of Wuhan. Costing Rmb8bn, the terminal is scheduled to start operation by 2014, part of a project to build the area into the largest trade centre for agricultural produce in central China.

The entire project, jointly invested by Hubei Provincial United Development and Investment Corp and Shenzhen Agricultural Produce, will be constructed in four phases and take six to eight years to complete. It will consist of trading areas, service centres, consumer experience facilities, and exhibition and conference centres. Upon completion of phase one next year, there will be wholesale markets for fruit, vegetable and fresh seafood, e-commerce distribution centres and a seafood street.

According to Wang Biqing, general manager of HiGreen Logistics for Agricultural Produce, some of the largest seafood suppliers in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, will set up business here next year. That will reduce the price of seafood in Wuhan, which is currently three times as expensive as in coastal Shenzhen.
