Chongqing to open inter-modal terminal by July

29 May 2013
Chongqing Guoyuan terminal second phase will open for business by July, according to Wang Yonghong, general manager of Chongqing Guoyuan Terminal Co. In a story published in China Water Transport newspaper on 27 May, Mr Wang said that the second phase of Guoyuan terminal is largely completed, with just its warehousing and other supporting facilities to finish off.

The second phase of Guoyuan terminal will contain 10 multi-purpose 5,000dwt berths with a total annual handling capacity of 2m TEU. It will also have a 5,000dwt bulk berth and three Ro-Ro berths.

A special railway line will be completed by the end of next year linking the terminal with the Chongqing-Huaihua railway on the national rail network. The rail head project, running 5km in both directions and costing Rmb250m, will have an annual capacity of 6m tons. It is designed to take cargo off the waterway to reach Sichuan, Guizhou, Shanxi and other provinces via rail.

The first phase, consisting of two 5,000dwt bulk berths, went into operation in 2010. The entire Guoyuan terminal project, costing Rmb10bn, has 16 berths with a total handling capacity of 30m tons. It was developed and operated by the state-owned Chongqing Port Group.

Meanwhile, Cuntan container terminal, in which Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has a share via its joint venture Chongqing Donggang Container Terminal, has finished its expansion project. Two additional container berths at Cuntan– numbers 6 and 7 – have been constructed, according to Chongqing International Container Terminal. The new berths will increase annual handling capacity to 1.4m TEU.

Last year, Cuntan’s handling capacity stood at 550,000 TEU.
