Cuntan collision causes container spill

12 June 2013
A major collision at Cuntan container terminal in Chongqing on 7 June caused about 30 containers to fall into the Yangtze River and float downstream. One vessel was stranded near the shipping channel and all 12 crew members were rescued.

The vessel J2005, belonging to Chongqing Shipping Co, was turning around at Cuntan before its scheduled sailing to Shanghai when it hit ‘Zhongtain 888’, which was waiting for its berth at a nearby anchorage. The latter vessel, owned by Santai Shipping, lost control within 15 minutes of being hit and in turn collided with two other vessels before being grounded 300 metres from its berth. The vessel overturned and about 30 containers fell into the water.

According to a local witness, the containers didn’t sink, but floated downstream.

Sources from the local maritime safety authorities said that the stranded vessel was stabilised shortly after the accident and didn’t pose any threat to passing vessels. The cause of the accident was being investigated and the floating boxes closely monitored, according to a story published by China Water Transport newspaper on 8 June.
