Luzhou-Wuhan-Taiwan container route to start in 2013

12 June 2013
News from a working meeting between Sichuan port and shipping officials say that a direct shipping route between Luzhou (Sichuan province), Wuhan (Hubei province) and Taiwan will start by the end of this year. The route will target Sichuan-based manufacturers of cars, engineering machinery, electronics and chemicals.

It is not clear what capacity the vessels will have, but those plying the upper reaches of the Yangtze usually carry 200 TEU and those on route between Wuhan and Yangshan about 350 TEU. The new route means that containers will be loaded onto bigger vessels in Wuhan without having to tranship in Shanghai. Thus, the journey time to Taiwan is expected to be reduced by four days to 16 days.
